New Year, New Career !

Happy New Year!

For some of us the New Year signifies a new beginning, an opportunity to try something new. It gives us a sort of new energy and a dire need to get organised, and perhaps take on a new challenge.

Research says the New Year is a great time to look into a new job. But with so many people thinking the same thing, what’s the best way to get ahead?

1 | Curriculum Vitae

Your Curriculum Vitae is the first thing recruiters see, so it’s important to make a great first impression! Firstly, make sure that the design is eye-catching; it does not need to be too elaborate, but try to steer away from the usual standard template. We recruiters see way too much of those, a change is always good. Then start off with writing a short summary of your key skills and accomplishments achieved thus far. This will give the recruiter a quick indication of not only your education and qualifications, but also your personality and communication skills.

2 | Job Hunting

Before starting your job hunt, take the time to think about where you would like to see yourself in the next 3 years. Take a note of your commitments outside work and the kind of lifestyle you would like to live. Having a full picture before applying for a new job, will not only save time but ensure that you are on the right track to get to where you want to be! Apart from applying for a job the usual way, if there is a particular company that has caught your attention but is currently not hiring, write out a short and polite email to the HR Manager, explaining that you have heard/ read about the company, that you are very keen about the possibility of working for that company and outline some of your key points – education, qualifications and relevant experience. If you wish you may also attach your CV and, with your permission the HR department, will keep your CV on file for any future opportunities within your line.

3 | Sell Yourself

Congratulations! You’ve landed a job interview, now it’s time to prepare for the big day. The key is to be PREPARED. Let’s go over some key things you need to do prior to an interview.

4 | Outfit

Make sure you have suitable attire for the interview and your shoes are unscuffed.

5 | Personal hygiene

Check on your grooming – hair, beards etc., and remember your fingernails!

6 | CV

Make an extra copy of your CV, relevant qualifications and references (just in case)

7 | Location

Make sure you have the full address and are well aware of where you need to go, if possible go to the location a day before to make sure you go it right and allow enough time for parking.

8 | Website

Go through the company website; learn how the company started off, what
services they offer and whom you will be meeting on the day.

9 | Sharpen those negotiation skills

Take the time to brush up on your negotiating skills, if you are after a higher salary, make sure to list the times where you’ve exhibited taking on extra responsibility and was driven to achieve better results. If the company did not list a particular wage then go ahead and negotiate but if they did list a wage range then this probably means that they will not budge. Refrain from using another job offer with a higher salary as a threat; this might put the recruiters off. You can say that you respectfully decline due to the fact that you were offered more by a company and that might give the recruiters the push they need to meet your expectations but do keep in mind that sometimes they have no choice but to let you go if your budget is too high.

10 | Knowledge

When chasing a new job there will always be something new for you to learn, the more you learn about your chosen career the more attractive you will be to recruiters. Trying taking up a course in the field and make sure to update your CV and LinkedIn profile. Recruiters scout social media profiles daily for potential candidates so make sure all your professional details and achievements are up to date and well described.
