Ways to handle pressure at work

Your workload is piling on, you have 3 deadlines this week and to top it all off your boss is on your case for not getting that report in on time! Pressure, this is something employers expect you to handle with ease, some of us can some of us can’t but for those who can’t this doesn’t mean you’re doomed, you just need to find ways to handle pressure in a calm and collected way. So here are some ideas to put into action to impress your colleagues with how great you can handle on-the-job pressure:

Plan ahead and stay organised

Planning ahead can greatly decrease your stress levels. Start by laying out your outfit in the evening for the next day and prepare your lunch, this will help avoid being late and rushing to get to the office in the morning. Once you are at the office, make a quick to-do-list and keep your workspace tidy. Keeping yourself organised, means avoiding the negative sides of clutter and thus making you more efficient with your work.

Focus

There is a lot going on in the office, people talking, distractions everywhere so understandably you may lose your focus. So start with planning your to-do list and avert your attention from the continuous chitter-chatter around you. Crossing things off your list will make you feel more at ease which in turn will lower your pressure levels and stress.

Help others

If you notice your colleagues struggling with their tasks, find a way you can help them to make the day less stressful and in turn show your employer what a good leader you are!

Stay away from drama

You should never engage in an argument or other disagreements with colleagues. Keep yourself busy to enable your thoughts to remain focused and most importantly – positive! At times we all tend to get sucked into the drama. But if you feel like something is really winding you up, stop and take a moment and proceed with a clear mind.

Feeling overwhelmed? Ask for help!

If you realise that you are going to fall behind on your work, especially when a particular task is bound to a deadline, get the help you need immediately. After all, you should have your employer’s interest in mind, so if asking for help will lead to better results, than go for it!

Limit your caffeine intake

Coffee is a good way to get you focused and going in the morning, but drinking too much of it can cause undue stress. So, limit your coffee intake, drink more water and try snacking on something like chocolate for an added boost of energy.

Take your lunch break

We cannot stress this enough, take your break! We know you are busy and there is so much to do but this doesn’t mean that you can’t take a bite to eat or just relax for half an hour -it will do you wonders.

Vacation Days

Utilise your vacation days wisely. Try to plan your holiday during the ‘quieter’ time at work, so that you won’t be disturbed by colleagues during your time off. Apart from that, staying on at work during the busy period shows your employer your dedication.
